In a person’s schooling years, a high IQ is certain to make them pass with flying colours. We all hear about Albert Einstein having the greatest IQ, we all hear that intelligence is something that takes us far in terms of educational achievement. While it is a vital skill set of life, there is something else that matters…

Emotional intelligence. This may sound as an oxymoron to some, as we often tend to take emotions and intelligence as two very different things. But really, these two things put together makes something that guarantees overall success in life. It has been defined as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions”. This includes the ability to manage emotions, accept flaws, having empathy for others, and having certain social skills.

People having high IQs normally tend to be born that way, naturally having the ability to think quickly, do mental calculations, work with maths, logic, numbers, etc. While emotional intelligence is something we can work to improve on, almost like developing a skill. Although some people are naturally more emotionally intelligent than others, you have the flexibility to gain more EQ over time.

I have already talked about the importance of controlling our emotional triggers in my last post- learning to identify emotional upsurges, and pro-actively dealing with them.

Along with that, it is also very important to understand the feelings of others, which is something we call empathy. While this is much easier said than done, it means trying and looking at things from the other person’s perspective, putting yourself in their shoes and trying to think or feel like them. “Be humble enough to know you’re not better than anyone, and wise enough to know that you’re different from the rest!”

Controlling emotions, understanding them, connecting with others, understanding their emotions, judiciously and empathetically handling relationships are things that need practice. They require a change in attitude and behaviour for long term results.

EQ and IQ are certainly not adversaries of each other. It is very much possible to have high levels of both, and that is what leads us to a more authentic, successful, and happier life.

In our body, our 5 senses are sent up to the brain in the form of electric signals that pass between the peripheral nervous system (nerves and neurones) and the central nervous system (up the spinal cord to the brain). They are first experienced ‘emotionally‘ in the Limbic area before moving to the Frontal Lobe or the rational processing area (responsible for encoding complex logic and rational information). The Limbic and Frontal areas communicate and work in tandem with one another, this is the source of EQ. But the challenge is that the limbic region can easily hi-jack the frontal lobe because it processes the data before it reaches the frontal lobe. This is why it is important to practice emotional intelligence. “Emotional intelligence isn’t about getting rid of emotions. Rather it’s about having control over them and using them to their advantage.”

And me being a person who is particularly devoted to subjects like science and mathematics which require cognitive intelligence, I have started to realise the importance of having an equally well maintained emotional intelligence.

No… they aren’t.. but I believe IQ is something inherited kind of and EQ is something learned. Though, it too can be inherited.

Honestly, IQ is impressive. But a person’s intelligence can be their own stupidity. It can also be said of EQ though. But knowing how to wield these 2 things is the greatest of intelligence.

Nope, for me EQ is more important than IQ. EQ helps you cope with stress and problems. And this is the most important thing to survive our day to day lives.

My meaning is you are not the only one who has learned the EQ lesson! There are many of us. The IQ will get you to a level but the EQ will get you to where you want to be.

    Very nice post!

To see it another way… IQ helps us in our relationship to the world we live in, to the things in it and how we might best understand them to our advantage.

EQ helps us in our relationships with people and other creatures with which we share the world and especially in our relationship to ourself.

We are emotional beings primarily, intellectual beings secondarily. 🙂

There is a legend. I am not sure if it is true but it makes the point clear about the other kind of intelligences that are required other than IQ.

Newton used to have two small doors in his house one slightly bigger than the other. Once someone asked why there are two doors in your house. Newton replied smaller for small car and bigger for the big cat.

That person then grabbed the smaller cat and made it go through the bigger door and said the smaller cat can go through the bigger door.😜

It could solely be down to how well our gut naturally supports the body, which may make all the difference to how well we manage ourselves from within ourselves..

To to be the best that we can be our body needs the right fuel.. 😁🙏👍💙

It’s much more complicated than the current neurological understanding. Even concepts like IQ and EQ are very rough approximations and are probably misleading. If we had enough intelligence and emotional sensitivity, well maybe we could understand things fully. Until then….

    Very interesting post:

But Einstein’s IQ is not the greatest ever recorded:

The highest IQ score ever recorded
Ainan Celeste Cawley (IQ score: 263)
William James Sidis (IQ score: 250-300)
    Terence Tao (IQ score: 225-230)
Marilyn Vos Savant (IQ score: 228)
    Christopher Hirata (IQ score: 225)
    Kim Ung-Yong (IQ score: 210)
    Edith Stern (IQ score: 200+)
Christopher Michael Langan (IQ score: 190 – 210)
    Garry Kasparov (IQ score: 194)
    Philip Emeagwali (IQ score: 190)
    Judit Polgar (IQ score: 170)
    Albert Einstein (IQ score: 160 – 190)
    Stephen Hawking (IQ score: 160)

Christopher Langan has been held back because of his low EQ having lived in a family with alcoholic parents and violence.

I feel that IQ is maybe 50% inherited and 50% nurture. And it can continue to change because of neuroplasticity

Very thoughtful post. Unfortunately, EQ is still not dealt with in pregraduating schools; however, EQ is that makes the less numbered army win in a battle, survive hardship in relationships or work, and keeps us alive besides the fact that it improves our performance. Anchoring should be thought in the very early age as well as EQ. 🤗🤗🌹

Both IQ and EQ are necessary. A lack of EQ can backfire in the organizations of the modern times in most of the countries.

The bulk of our lives is our relationships that require EQ.
In an intimate relationship, especially an interracial one like the one I am in, high IQ doesn’t make up for lack of EQ and it took me years before this truth dawned upon me but eventually I started working hard on raising my EQ.
It is easier to get a PhD than raise a stepson and deal with the extended family and all the trials that being in a relationship like mine entail. Nice article

I totally agree with this! IQ will only get you so far. The key to success is EQ because our relationships with people are those that get our foot in the door. People skills always trump education and technical skills and I know too many Sheldon Coopers who are broke and unemployed because they have zero people skills! Thank you for addressing something that many people don’t get!
