Is IQ more important than EQ?

In a person’s schooling years, a high IQ is certain to make them pass with flying colours. We all hear about Albert Einstein having the greatest IQ, we all hear that intelligence is something that takes us far in terms of educational achievement. While it is a vital skill set of life, there is something else that matters…

Emotional intelligence. This may sound as an oxymoron to some, as we often tend to take emotions and intelligence as two very different things. But really, these two things put together makes something that guarantees overall success in life. It has been defined as “the ability to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions”. This includes the ability to manage emotions, accept flaws, having empathy for others, and having certain social skills.

People having high IQs normally tend to be born that way, naturally having the ability to think quickly, do mental calculations, work with maths, logic, numbers, etc. While emotional intelligence is something we can work to improve on, almost like developing a skill. Although some people are naturally more emotionally intelligent than others, you have the flexibility to gain more EQ over time.

I have already talked about the importance of controlling our emotional triggers in my last post- learning to identify emotional upsurges, and pro-actively dealing with them.

Along with that, it is also very important to understand the feelings of others, which is something we call empathy. While this is much easier said than done, it means trying and looking at things from the other person’s perspective, putting yourself in their shoes and trying to think or feel like them. “Be humble enough to know you’re not better than anyone, and wise enough to know that you’re different from the rest!”

Controlling emotions, understanding them, connecting with others, understanding their emotions, judiciously and empathetically handling relationships are things that need practice. They require a change in attitude and behaviour for long term results.

EQ and IQ are certainly not adversaries of each other. It is very much possible to have high levels of both, and that is what leads us to a more authentic, successful, and happier life.

In our body, our 5 senses are sent up to the brain in the form of electric signals that pass between the peripheral nervous system (nerves and neurones) and the central nervous system (up the spinal cord to the brain). They are first experienced ‘emotionally‘ in the Limbic area before moving to the Frontal Lobe or the rational processing area (responsible for encoding complex logic and rational information). The Limbic and Frontal areas communicate and work in tandem with one another, this is the source of EQ. But the challenge is that the limbic region can easily hi-jack the frontal lobe because it processes the data before it reaches the frontal lobe. This is why it is important to practice emotional intelligence. “Emotional intelligence isn’t about getting rid of emotions. Rather it’s about having control over them and using them to their advantage.”

And me being a person who is particularly devoted to subjects like science and mathematics which require cognitive intelligence, I have started to realise the importance of having an equally well maintained emotional intelligence.

  1. You are very wise for your young age! Emotional intelligence can really make a difference in the quality of our lives, and it’s truly important for us to learn how to manage our emotions. These are such valuable lessons especially when we learn them earlier in life, it can save us a lot of disappointments, regrets & guilt over the years. Excellent post! ❤ Amira

  2. What about people that haven´t went to the university and have a great education but got the street education, do those ones have a high IQ?

In seriousness, very nice post and a joy to read this blog. I liked the title ” Fun with philosophy”, that was smart and catchy.

    How is my IQ?

  3. Great article. This subject is unfortunately overlooked in the hustle of society today. IQ is simply the capacity of time it takes a person to solve complex problems. While it is a great skill set to have, it is not necessary for one’s overall success. There is no greater example of this than the late Henry Ford. Despite less than average capacity to solve problems, he was able to use aspects of EQ to control his fears and get the brightest of minds at the time on his team to help him solve the most complicated business problems of his time. Great article and I can’t wait to see what is next.

  4. You are very ambitious, if you are still 14 years old. In America, no one with a doctorate moves when a concept is not recognized as science by the American Psychological Association. If I am not running “behind” there is not test yet to measure EQ adequately. One of the reasons, is that all IQ (-and -other psychological tests) is/are mixed with EQ. Another reason might be that for some jobs and EQ is not (hardly) needed. Fruther IQ is mixed with social intelligence, and measured as such. You see all the stumbling blocks to “really” separate EQ from IQ fro SQ?

  5. I have had heard of EQ in leadership books and management lessons. EQ is also about knowing what others want, empathizing with them and being a good team.
This post shows the difference of IQ and EQ in detail and I had never seen it before. I like the point of controlling emotions and EQ doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t care about emotions.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I had done a MOOC by Edinburgh University on Philosophy from Coursera. So, despite being a management graduate, I like to read about philosophy, so you’ve earned yourself a new follower!
    Keep it up, Saania!

  6. Well, the members of my family who had high IQs often screwed up their lives. It’s like, why did you do that? Why did you go to school for so long and can’t find a job? Why do I have to work 3 other jobs to support you when you say I”m stupid? They use their tested IQs to justify getting this or that. I used to buy into it, and I would worship the darlings at school and home.

I have some slower people in my family who are VERY successful. You can’t judge a whole individual by one test. We each have a skillset and interests. Even if your IQ is 199, you still have to develop knowledge from the outside world. And not all people have the time to get a PhD in theoretical physics and two majors in Biology and literature. Someone might not be as smart as this guy, but they have more time to study and be relevant to that field.

Everyone finds their niche in life.

  8. I never thought about EQ before, but i think is depend the person we all have different gifts, same way goes like for some us is more valuable IQ and we forget about the EQ, but i think combination of both would perfect emotional control needed, sadly not everyone gifted this much, but we can always improve and work on it, wonderful posts Saania :)🤗

  10. IQ is got by hardwork and luck. And EQ we will get it from the period of life. Rarely some people have the correct EQ balance. It always depends upon the situations! Good thought!
